In her role, she has contributed to executing communication strategies for national and regional forums, stakeholder engagements, and advocacy campaigns—positioning the Commission as a trusted and visible voice on critical social issues. Her journey from campus radio to government communications exemplifies how foundational media skills can serve the public good.
Chuka University Radio Experience
Salome’s two years at Chuka University Radio provided the immersive practical environment where her communication philosophy was shaped. As a Presenter, Producer, and News Anchor hosting the Barikiwa show as well as Kiswahili and Business News programmes, she developed essential skills in communication and presentation, news writing and editing, interviewing and moderation, and audience engagement. “My journey in media started at Chuka University Radio, where I discovered the power of storytelling—to connect with people and inspire change in the society,” she reflects. “At the radio station, I was immersed in a practical environment that allowed me to hone my skills in live reporting, storytelling and audience engagement. Most importantly, it instilled in me a belief in communication as a tool for social impact—a foundation that continues to guide my work.” With one year of professional experience, she now applies these competencies daily at the National Gender and Equality Commission, crafting messages that inform, inspire, and connect with target audiences on matters of national importance. “The skills and confidence I gained from the station shaped my ability to craft messages that inform, inspire and connect with target audience,” she affirms. “Today as I work as a Communication Officer, I draw on that foundation every day to turn ideas into impactful stories that impact the society.”
