MCK Accredits Students, Holds Digital Journalism Mentorship Forum at Chuka University

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) on Thursday visited Chuka University for student accreditation and a career mentorship forum on Reimagining Journalism in the Digital Era.
The delegation, led by Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja, paid a courtesy call to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (ARSA), Prof. Gilbert Nduru, who received them on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. Also present was the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS), Prof. Kyalo wa Ngula, alongside COD Humanities Prof. Dickson Nkonge and Media Section Head Dr. Henry Nabea.
Speaking during the forum, Prof. Nduru emphasized the University’s commitment to producing competent and ethical media professionals ready for a rapidly evolving industry.
“The media landscape is changing at an unprecedented pace. Our students must embrace innovation, adaptability, and continuous learning to remain relevant and competitive,” he said.
On his part, Prof. Kyalo urged students to position themselves strategically within the digital space, noting that journalism has fundamentally transformed.
“Digital media is no longer optional; it is the driving force of modern journalism. Our students must build strong multimedia competencies and leverage emerging platforms to tell impactful stories,” the Dean stated.
Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Karanja challenged learners to rethink traditional newsroom approaches and focus on building dynamic digital portfolios.
“The future journalist is a multimedia professional. Develop skills in mobile journalism, video production, podcasting, and data storytelling. Your portfolio should reflect the realities of today’s digital newsroom,” he advised.
The visit culminated in the accreditation and issuance of press cards to students, marking a significant milestone in their professional journey and reinforcing the strong partnership between the University and the Media Council of Kenya.
