New Student Leaders Inaugurated as Chuka University Reaffirms Commitment to Infrastructure and Student Welfare

Chuka University on Tuesday inaugurated a new team of student leaders in a ceremony marking a transition in the leadership of the Chuka University Students’ Association (CUSA) for the 2026-2027, with the university administration reaffirming its commitment to infrastructure development and student welfare.

Presiding over the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Mutembei said the university remains focused on improving academic and residential facilities through ongoing infrastructure projects.

“The construction of the new library building, the School of Law complex, and additional student hostels is ongoing and remains a priority for the university,” the Vice-Chancellor said, noting that the projects are intended to enhance learning resources and address accommodation challenges faced by students.

Addressing concerns on student accessibility and movement within the institution, the Vice-Chancellor announced a planned adjustment to the gatepass system.

“Going forward, gatepasses will be issued based on faculties to improve coordination and enhance accessibility within the university,” he said, adding that the move aligns with part of the agenda presented by the incoming student leadership.

Deputy Vice-Chancellors who addressed the gathering emphasized discipline, academic focus, and mutual respect within the university community. Prof. Jonah Kindiki urged the newly inaugurated leaders to uphold integrity and promote academic excellence.

“Student leaders have a responsibility to promote academic excellence and maintain a conducive learning environment by acting as ambassadors of integrity and responsible leadership,” Prof. Kindiki said.

Prof. Gilbert Nduru expressed the importance of dialogue and constructive engagement between students and university management.

“Peaceful and constructive engagement is essential for institutional growth and the effective implementation of student-centered policies,” Prof. Nduru said, encouraging the new leadership to embrace dialogue as the primary means of resolving issues.

Outgoing CUSA president Ben Geoffrey Jakatoo reflected on his tenure, attributing the achievements realized to cooperation with the university administration and the student body.

“The progress we achieved was made possible through unity and cooperation between students and the university management,” Jakatoo said, as he thanked the administration for its support and advised the incoming leaders to remain accountable and united.

Incoming CUSA president Alasker Keith Kipchumba expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him by students and pledged to prioritize inclusivity and transparency.

“I am committed to advocating for student welfare and working closely with the university management to improve accessibility, learning, and the overall well-being of students,” Kipchumba said.

The ceremony also featured the formal handover of instruments of office, symbolizing continuity in leadership and respect for democratic processes within the institution. It concluded with a call for unity among students, staff, and management as Chuka University continues to invest in infrastructure development and inclusive leadership to support sustainable academic growth.
